Aug. 20th, 2008 @ 07:32 am Need advice on pricing & selling a horse
Hello everyone.   The horse market in Georgia sucks right now, and add to the the fact that I've never sold a horse in my life.   Now that we have our stallion here and are focusing on the Arabians, I really need to get rid of my Appendix mare Zelda.  I got her with the intentions of doing lessons here but I have no clue if/when my arena will ever get built, and having such a big mare around my tiny little Arabs makes me a nervous wreck.

Zelda is a 17H HUGE Appenidix mare.  She was shown extensively and sucessfully with her previous owner in Jumping and Dressage.  She's kid safe, bombproof, and a really sweet in your pocket kind of girl.  She's dominant mare, and needs to be turned out with geldings or more docile mares.  She can be a pain to catch in the 11 acre field, but is a breeze to catch anywhere else.  She trailers like a champ, clips, LOVES baths, stands for the farrier, and has no bad habits.

What is a fair price to ask for a horse like this?  Does anyone have any recomendations for where to advertise that is *worth* the cost?

We are 45 minutes south of Atlanta btw.   Excuse the mess in the photo, she was hanging out with me while I tore down old fencing and put up the electric tape this week when I shot this picture.  She's also standing on a small hill. :)

Aug. 20th, 2008 @ 12:08 am horse trailer shopping
Hi all. I am looking for some trailer purchasing advice. I don't have a ton of money, so I am looking to buy an old "beater" trailer, to fix up myself, but I also don't want to buy a total piece of junk. I have never owned a horse trailer, so I am not sure what to look for as far as potential problems that would make the trailer not worth purchasing. Can anyone give me a few pointers? Here is one that I am considering: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/grd/800185941.html

Thanks! :-)

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 09:33 pm Saddle Repair- NE Ohio (Or Ohio/Western PA)
I have two saddles, both of which are just schooling saddles, that have some stitching coming loose. I used to have a guy that I took this kind of stuff to, but alas, he's gotten to the point where he feels he's too old to repair tack correctly.

I sent one to a person he recommended, and even after explicit instruction of "replace the fender" on it, he instead just put a piece of leather behind the tear in the fender and sewed it to the torn pieces. Uhh.... that won't pass a tack inspection for anything.

Does anyone know of a person that can redo leather and sew saddles preferrably in the NE Ohio area, but also anywhere in Ohio or Western PA would work.

Thanks!

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 09:26 pm To Wrap or...or what?
I have a new student and her horse is drastically over at the knee. She wants to do pretty low level stuff with him--dressage and some light jumping. I don't want to turn this into a huge argument about what should and shouldn't be done, but how can we help the horse? Specifically, wraps.

An example of how badly this horse is over at the knee:

Ok, he's not quite that bad, but pretty darn close. In both front legs.

Poll #1244941 Wraps

What option would be the most beneficial for a horse over at the knee?

View Answers

Polo wraps all the time
4 (20.0%)

Sport boots all the time
9 (45.0%)

Polo wraps just for jumping
0 (0.0%)

Sport boots just for jumping
1 (5.0%)

No boots or wraps
6 (30.0%)

Feel free to elaborate on your response.

ETA: Or, just feel free to say "ARE YOUR FREAKIN' CRAZY?!?! DON'T JUMP THIS HORSE!!!" because honestly, that's my knee jerk reaction. *sigh* But, I will try to present a less bleak picture to my student if possible.

Particularily dressage (because I can't complain with jumping. It's about damn time that Ian Millar, after waiting 36 years, got a medal! (which probably would have been gold had we been able to drop but hey, c'est la vie)): I think the judges have blinders on when they see Isabel and Anky (yes, those are their freestyles from HongKong. Bless you YoutTube). They must get an automatic 5% increase just for having cool names. Yes, Satchmo has an amazing half pass, and yes Salinero has a lovely piaffe and extended trot, but here's the thing. They weren't brilliant. At all. Satchmo looked tense and lacking his normal brilliance. And frick, sorry, his little "oops" moment, again? That was Satchmo giving Isabel the finger. That should have been penalized so heavily that she was knocked out of the medals...even our announcer, Cara Whitmore (an FEI judge) said that she believed that that would take Isabel out of medal contention and was quite surprised to see the score. And Anky's freestyle? It was ok. It was consistent. Ok, I'll be honest, it was damn boring. it seemed to have no passion or brilliance to it. In fact, I was almost lulled to sleep with the weird elevator music that never seemed to change. The horse had no halt (again!) and he looked pissed in the tempis. EVERYTHING was done on a straight line, close to the walls, so how she got a good score in difficulty is beyond me (where as Steffan Peters from the US had quite a techniqually difficult test, and did quite well, but wasn't rewarded!) Yet, there she is, gold medal winner, again.
Oh, politics of dressage, how you break my heart.

I sat through Synchronized Swimming so I could watch 2 rounds of dressage and 2 half rounds!!! You had a full hour and a half of eventing dressage ( which was like watching water trying to boil (no offense to my eventing friends)), but you give me 20 minutes of the really cool set to music stuff. Plus you cut out to commercial during in the middle of someone's round. WTF NBC!!! YOU FAIL! I am very disappointed.

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 06:13 pm Helmets - IRH Elite?
Tags:
I'm looking to buy a new helmet, so when a Dover catalog came today in the mail, I flipped to the helmets section. I was thinking about getting the International ATH, but I saw a new ad for the IRH Elite Riding Helmet.

Does anyone know if there's much of a difference, other than design? The ATH is sliiiightly more expensive, and I would expect their new model to be more expensive than the old, not the other way around.

Or, should I forget the two, and break down and buy a Charles Owen GR8?

Feel free to recommend another helmet, or voice opinions about the three above. (I'm riding in a Troxel helmet that has no vents now, and I've never had a problem overheating in it.) I'm a very indecisive person.

Anyone know if the horses in Wellington have made out ok? The above picture is of a BARN! If anyone recognizes it, could they let us know if everyone is healthy and out of danger?

(not sure which tags to put, please help with that and i'll gladly add them!)

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 01:31 am tack geeks, unite!
I am an unabashed tack GEEK. If it were at all marginably profitable, I'd either have an online store stocked with the best sort of items I find or work as a sales rep for the companies I REALY believe in. Alas, such a profit is not to be had, not for that degree of work.

having said that, I wanted to share some of the cooler finds of the moment out there -- where as some of you browse dreamhose.com dream shopping, I window shop in tack store websites :)

** = an item I owned or have owned, so feel free to ask more questions. or photos of said item in action.

enjoy!

TACK GEEKS ARE US, BARGAINS AHEAD . . . .  )

(ps. primarily referring VTO Saddlery and SmartPak links because of their cheap shipping, but many others found at Dover Saddlery, the Gifted Horse, Equus Now, etc)

Next time I can do things like breeches (with tons of input from those in this community!) as well as ways to stylishly convert your snaffle dressage bridle into a double bridle, etc. As well as good gnat/ear protection on trail rides and evening riding.

for the most part, I'm going to AVOID the touchy area of supplements. SmartPak has their comparison charts for anyone wanting to know the pros/cons of different ones on the market.

Any other horse-tack stuff you are curious about??

Aug. 18th, 2008 @ 07:43 pm Tips for riding in college

Hello everyone, I'm off to college in 2 weeks and I'm looking for some tips to make my life easier.
I'm going to be riding and working at the barn every day.  Thankfully I have a single room so I don't have to worry about the smell offending my roommate.

I keep a lot of my stuff at the barn, but I still need to figure out what to do as far as washing barn clothes and horse laundry, changing clothes, shoes, etc.

I figure I can throw my dirty horse laundry (mostly saddle pads, polo wraps, etc) in the trunk of my car, then sneak down to my dorm's laundromat to wash them, hehe.  I bought a drying rack for my room so I can dry them in there, or will it make them moldy?  I could bring a fan to dry them faster, I suppose.

There's one day a week where I have to go straight from the barn to class, which I'm not looking forward to.  I can change shoes but probably won't have the motivation to change clothes.  Has anyone else gone to class in barn clothes? haha

Another problem is that I have to ride my bike from my dorm to the parking lot where my car is so that I can drive to the barn - so I really don't know how I'm going to cart boots/dressage pads on a bike..

Basically any tips on how you made riding and college easier would be very helpful.  Thanks!!
